Lowther Horse Driving Trials
Lowther Castle Estate, Penrith, Cumbria
One of northern England's premier horse driving trials, set in the dramatic landscape of the Lake District foothills on the Lowther estate. The terrain here is genuinely challenging — steep hills, varied going and clever hazard design make this one of the more demanding marathons on the national circuit. The restored ruins of Lowther Castle provide an unforgettable backdrop. A must for any serious driving enthusiast visiting the north of England.

Holker Hall Carriage Driving
Holker Hall, Cark-in-Cartmel, Cumbria
The beautiful grounds of Holker Hall — one of Cumbria's finest country houses — host this popular pleasure driving and showing event early in the season. A wonderful way to begin the competitive season.

Floors Castle Driving Trials
Floors Castle, Kelso, Scottish Borders
Scotland's premier driving trials, set in the magnificent grounds of Floors Castle — the largest inhabited castle in Scotland and home to the Duke of Roxburghe. A key event for Scottish drivers and an accessible destination for those travelling from northern England.

Pleasure drives and competitive classes through the spectacular New Forest National Park, one of England's most distinctive and atmospherically beautiful landscapes. Semi-feral New Forest ponies wandering freely across the course add a uniquely local character.

BDS National Championships
Various venues across the UK
The end-of-season climax of the British driving calendar, where the best drivers from every region come together to compete for national titles across all classes and disciplines. The championship rotates venues from year to year, ensuring different regions host this prestigious event. Qualifying for the BDS Nationals is a significant achievement for any driver and the competition is invariably of the highest standard. A fitting conclusion to the British driving season.

BDS Area Shows

In addition to the major named events, the British Driving Society's regional clubs and areas run a full calendar of area shows throughout the season — typically from April through October. These events range from small, informal club days to full three-phase combined driving competitions with multiple classes.

Area shows are the backbone of the UK driving calendar. They are where most drivers do the majority of their competing — close to home, in familiar company, with entry fees and logistics that make regular participation realistic. They are also the essential stepping stone toward the bigger events: success at area level leads to invitations to qualifier events and ultimately to the Nationals.

To find area shows near you, visit the BDS website or contact your nearest affiliated regional club. Most clubs publish their full programme at the start of the season and welcome entries from non-members in many classes.

For spectators: Almost all BDS-affiliated shows are free or very low cost to spectate, and children are particularly welcome. The marathon phase in particular offers exciting close-up viewing at hazards. Check the BDS events calendar for shows in your area and go along — you may well find yourself catching the driving bug!
